Umar Akmal Faces a Three-Year Ban After Failing to Report Match-fixing Approaches

The right-handed batsman and a part-time spinner for the Pakistani cricket team, Umar Akmal, has been banned from all forms of cricket for at least three years after he pleaded guilty to failing to report the match-fixing approaches.

The Chairman of the Disciplinary Panel, Justice (retired) Fazal-e-Miran Chauhan handed Umar Akmal a strict three-year ban from cricket of all sorts.

“The PCB referred the matter to the chairman of the disciplinary committee after determining that the batsman had not requested a hearing,” said the board.

The Pakistan Cricket Board announced the decision on Monday. A disciplinary committee of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) reported the verdict after a hearing in which the Umar Akmal was accused of two violations.

Since the 20th of February, the batsman’s had been provisionally suspended by PCB under the anti-corruption code under Article 2.4.4, that states: “Failing to disclose to the PCB Vigilance and Security Department (without unnecessary delay) full details of any approaches or invitations received by the Participant to engage in Corrupt Conduct under this Anti-Corruption Code”.

During the hearing, Akmal admitted that the events that formed the basis for the PCB’s two charges against him had, in fact, happened, but he pointed out that the conditions were such that they did not require to be reported to the commission.

“The PCB doesn’t take any pleasure in seeing a promising international cricketer being declared ineligible for three years on corruption charges, but this is once again a timely reminder to all who think they can get away by breaching the anti-corruption code,” PCB’s director of anti-corruption and security, said Lt Col Asif Mahmood, stated after the hearing.
