Chinese New Year 2020 is the Year of the Rat!
New Year’s has been longer over for us but for the Chinese, the celebrations have just begin! The Chinese New Year will officially begin on the 25th of January, 2020 will end on February 4th.
The Chinese New Year is also called the Spring Festival because it signals the start of Spring.
Currently the celebrations of Little New Year, called ‘Xiaonian’ in Chinese, is going on in full swing. Little New Year is celebrated usually a week before the actual New Year. This year’s preparations for the new year began on January 17th, 2020, and will last until New Years Eve i.e 24th of January.
The Chinese New Year will be observed by more than a billion people worldwide and countries such as North and South Korea, Singapore Vietnam celebrate it because the Spring Festival is followed according to the lunar calendar that most Easten Cou.
The Chinese years are divided among the 12 animals of the Chinese Zodiac cycle, and the year 2020 is the year of the Rat!
According to the Chinese culture, a Rat represents great fortune. They symbolize fertility and are harbingers of wealth. There are various myths that revolve around the celebration of the Spring Festival. One of the famous legends consists of a monster named “Nian” that would come out on every New Year’s Even and terrorize the people causing them to hide in their homes. However, one boy who was brave enough managed to fight off the monster by lighting up firecrackers and this is why the tradition of a beautiful display of fireworks and firecrackers became an integral part of Spring Festival celebrations.
