So, we’re sure you must be wondering whether do essential oils really work? We’ve heard some people claim them to be their holy grail whereas others we’re too scared to try oils in a raw manner. However, it is important for one to first have a proper understanding of what essential oils are and what are they used for and we’ve got this covered for you.
What are Essential Oils?
Essential oil is a concentrated extract of plants that is obtained from the flowers, bark, leaves or even fruit of the plants to capture the liquid compounds. The liquid is then formed as oil is extracted from plants and herbs that have proven benefits and possess healing properties and are safe for human use. The useful compounds are thus extracted from them.
Oils are formed in two categories. Essential oils and Carrier oils. Essential oils are distilled or cold-pressed from the aromatic leaves, peels, bark, and roots of the plant whereas Carrier oils are vegetable oils, such as coconut oil, olive oil, mustard oil or even avocado oil. These carrier oils are those that have been derived from the seeds, kernels, or nuts of a plant or by heating the vegetable to form a pure form.
Most people wonder and ask if oils are so to be digested or consumed orally? Then the answer to that is only Carrier Oils are safe to eat and most of our food is cooked in it as well. However, Essential Oils are toxic and not safe to consume orally. So, make sure you only apply essential oils outwardly.
If you’re wondering how essential oils are extracted or obtained from the plants then the most common two methods by which essential oils are extracted for use is Cold Pressing and Distillation:
- Cold pressing is the process of extracting the oil from a plant by mechanically squeezing it so it’s liquid extract is obtained. It uses a hydraulic press that uses pressure and presses the plant, herb, bark, spice or even fruit to squeeze out its juice or oil. This is what is referred to as cold-pressed oil
- Distillation is the process of separating the liquid compounds from the plant to form the oil by boiling and heating it to cause condensation. This way, with distillation, the resulted oil is a nearly and not completely pure form of oil because of the possibility of partial separation of the components.
The reason why essential oils have the word “essential” is basically because of the oil that is extracted is to form an “Essence” from the plant, thus the name essential oil is given.
How to Use Essential Oils
Using an essential doesn’t have to follow a pattern or have a restricted pattern. People tend to use essential oils however they find them comfortable to use.
However, you must take precautions before directly applying essential oils directly on your skin because some of the essential oils are phototoxic and photosensitive which can cause burns if applied in large amounts and undiluted. Such as undiluted Lemon Oil, Peppermint Oil, and Lavender Oil are examples of oils that can burn your skin. So, make sure you mix your essential oil with a carrier oil.
The most common way to use essential oils is to inhale them, either directly or with the help of a humidifier or diffuser. This method is also called Aromatherapy, as the aroma of these oils can prove to be healing and have calming properties.
You can also dilute essential oils with a carrier oil and apply it directly to your skin. Tea Tree oils and Lavender Oil is highly recommended if you have skin related problems such as acne, psoriasis, dandruff or rosacea. You can use it after cleansing your face as a skincare regime. These oils can even heal insect bites.
You should first know what your skin type is, whether it’s dry, oily, combination skin, or acne-prone and use to the oils accordingly. A 24-hour patch test is recommended first.
Drops of essential oils can be used in your bath as well to create a relaxing and de-stressing therapy.
