Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Did you know? Breast Cancer is the second most common cause of death by cancer in women.

Pakistan has the highest rate of Breast Cancer than any other country in Asia. Every year there are approximately 90,000 victims diagnosed with breast cancer out of which 40,000 don’t even survive. What’s more concerning is that 1 in 9 Pakistani women are at risk of breast cancer. 

Women can detect breast cancer signs by getting annual screenings and by basic self-examinations. As we all know that prevention is better than cure, therefore, it is essential that people become familiar with common habits that causes cancer.

Cancer often goes undetected at an early stage and people only ever notice and seek medical attention when it’s too late. Detecting breast cancer at an early stage increases survival rates. Many women in Pakistan, especially in the rural areas do not have enough have access and awareness regarding breast cancer, thus, it is essential that an awareness session be held to educate the masses of the severity of breast cancer.

Breast cancer cells usually form a tumor that can often be seen on an x-ray or felt as a lump. To ensure you and your close ones are safe, it is essential to check for early signs of breast cancer. You can get mammography done to check for any visible threats, however, not all symptoms can be detected through mammography.

Common Causes of Breast Cancer

An unhealthy lifestyle and habits are of one the main sources of any form of diseases in humans. In Pakistan, people are often accustomed to unhygienic and unsanitary living conditions, especially in the rural area. This causes a risk of catching infections such as hepatitis and human papilloma virus (HPV). These infections can be underlying factors that cause cancer.

Other factors that cause cancer include alcohol abuse, excessive tobacco use, unhealthy diet and lack of exercise. Thus, it is imperative that we step together to create awareness, so we can educate the people around us to follow a healthy lifestyle.

The detection of breast cancer in it’s early stages increases the possible changes of survival. To ensure you and your close ones are safe it is essential to check for early signs of breast cancer. Symptoms of Breast Cancer:

Many women often tend to ignore the initial symptoms and signs of breast cancer due to lack of knowledge and ignorance and rule them out as minor discomforts. It is important that you can if you or any of your loved ones notice any of the following signs, you should immediately seek medical attention.

The symptoms and warning signs of Breast Cancer include:

  • A lump in your armpit or breast
  • Pain or tenderness in your breast
  • A change of temperature, size, or texture in your breast
  • Soreness and swelling in your armpit, breast or collarbone.
  • Discharge from your nipples
  • Sores, burning, itching, dis-figuration of the nipple

As October is globally recognized as the month for breast cancer awareness, Daraz has combined hands with the Pink Ribbon organization to eliminate the rapid spread of breast cancer in Pakistan.

Pink Ribbon, in 2004, launched it’s first breast cancer awareness program in Pakistan. It is recognized as Pakistan’s first state-of-the-art diagnostic treatment and counseling facility for Breast Cancer patients and potential victims and aims to establish a breast cancer hospital that provides underprivileged and needy patients cost-free treatments.
