Pakistan Looks into Chloroquine as a Possible Treatment for Coronavirus

The Punjab Government is making an attempt to step up its efforts in understanding the Covid-19. As it tries to make a breakthrough in finding a cure for the virus that has infected over half a million people and taking lives of around 40,000 around the world.

CM Usman Buzdaar has vowed to use all the resources in researching about the connection between the Covid-19 and chloroquine.

Provincial health minister, Dr. Yasmin Rashid has also validated that chloroquine phosphate cab be a possible cure for the virus, and that it could be used to treat the infected people. She says that a recent research shows that chloroquine, which is a medicine that’s prescribed in case of malaria, is very effective against the novel virus.

Ever since the U.S. President, Donald Trump, claimed that the FDA has approved the chloroquine drug to treat the virus, the drug has been making headlines. He insisted that the medicine has shown extremely promising results and will be made available in the market as soon as possible.

However, the effectiveness of the drug against the Covid-19 is under study.

Dr. Yasmin said that, “We are not only taking steps to curb the spread of coronavirus but all-out efforts are being made to prepare effective medicines to treat the affected patients.”

According to her, chloroquine has been giving good results at experimental level and with more encouraging results, the drug would be purchased. She also mentioned that Ataur Rahman, the renowned Pakistani scientist, is also working to on various medicines in search of a cure, and he will soon submit a report to the government about this.

In a press briefinf, CM Buzdar said that the experts at the University of Health Sciences (UHS) are burning the midnight oil to find a possible cure for the disease. He also said that, “Pakistan could become the first country to prepare a vaccine for coronavirus.”

Dr. Javed Akram, the vice chancellor of UHS, has also said that there’s a high chance for chloroquine to be effective in treating the novel virus.
