Pakistani Young Man Volunteers in China to Help with Coronavirus Prevention

While the novel coronavirus continues to spread and threaten China, a young Pakistani student has been motivating locals to step up and volunteer in helping to control the epidemic.

This young man, Muhammad Mansoor Alam Khan is an enthusiastic person who never fails to impress people with his fluent Mandarin. Now, he has decided to stay in Shanghai, China, to volunteer there during the coronavirus outbreak.

The 26-year old, put on a mask, a pair of goggles and a protective suit, and began distributing masks and manuals on how to prevent epidemic to the locals. He then headed to the highway checkpoint where he helped in inspecting vehicles that were entering Shanghai. During all this, Mansoor was taking body temperatures of drivers and passengers, while reminding them to scan a QR code to register their physical health.

Mansoor said, “Few people can tell that I am a foreigner since I’m well-armed. They are astonished and often express their gratitude to me when they find out.”

This young man came to China in 2015 to pursue his master;s in electric engineering at Xi’an Jiaotong University. He graduated in 2018, found a job in Shanghai and has been living in Shanghai since.

Around 20 people live in Mansoor’s community in Waigang Township of Jiading District. He has become a coordinator between the community workers and foreign residents.

“Some occasionally question me about taking their body temperatures, and I’ll explain to them that early detection is the most effective method to prevent further transmission of the virus”, added Mansoor.

Local vounteers also felt motivated by Mansoor’s initiative.

They said, “Other volunteers are happy that I joined them. I think my presence makes them feel that they are not alone and that many are standing along with Chinese people to combat the epidemic.”

Mansoor also commented, “It’s no big deal. China has given me a good education, job and cozy life. It is the least I can do to pay back. China is my second home and it now needs me. Both my sisters are doctors, and they always stay in the hospital to take care of patients during festivals. My father always said helping others is the best path to happiness. I think the Chinese government is doing the best and providing the best solutions available at the moment. We foreign residents should support and stand together with China. Let’s knock out this virus together. I think the Chinese government is doing the best and providing the best solutions available at the moment. We foreign residents should support and stand together with China. Let’s knock out this virus together. I believe I’ll stay in China for the rest of my life”.
