Petition Calls to Replace Brie Larson in ‘Captain Marvel’ Sequel

The Hollywood Reporter says that the second part to Disney’s Captain Marvel has recently gotten a green signal. The studio are trying to finalize a director for the movie, whilst facing another opposition.

An online petition has been filed to replace the movie protagonist, Brie Larson, with a woman of color. So that the character is more in line with a better known reincarnation of Captain Marvel in the comics.

The petition has been filed on Care2 Petitions under the name, “Demand Captain Marvel is Played by a Woman of Color, Not Brie Larson!” The petition is also a practical way of putting Brie Larson’s talk of social justice to real test by allowing a “gay woman of color” to play the role.

The petition reads,

“We need Brie Larson to step down from her role to prove she is an ally of social justice and ensure a gay woman of color plays the role. Let Monica, the original female and black Captain Marvel instead of white-washing characters for the benefit of the straight, white men running Disney.”

By Monica, fans are referring to Monica Rambeau – the second Captain marvel in the comics, before Carol Carol Danvers, as depicted in the MCU. This was the first time an African-American superhero was shown in the comics. It was also the very first time an African American heroine became a member of the Avengers. Later, she also became the leader of Avengers for a short time.

Carol Danvers is the latest character to take on Captain Marvel’s mantle back in 2012. But, the character existed since long ago by the name Ms Marvel.

In addition to that, the petition also highlights how Larson hasn’t donated to any charities other than The Motion Picture and Television Fund Foundation Larson.

So far, the petition has already reached 27,000 signatures.
